New Traffic Monitoring Service In Delhi

Posted by Gary On May - 18 - 2010

The police force in Delhi have come up with an interesting new initiative that, hopefully, will spread to other areas of the world. Adding the Delhi traffic police to your friends list in FaceBook now gives you live traffic updates.

According to Rajan Bhagat of the Delhi Police, “The response has been overwhelming”.

But when it comes to giving traffic reports, it is not just one person doing the job. In fact a whole team is responsible for making things happen.

The teams get their information from helpline numbers and calls from commuters, and then publish the information online. The information is posted to Twitter as well as FaceBook.

For the service to work, the public has to consistently transmit information to the traffic reporting teams. Regular citizens are therefore encouraged to send in information and participate in the program.

Delhi will be the host of the commonwealth games and hopes to implement their traffic reporting program at that time.

The traffic reporting group on facebook already has over 2,000 fans. This is still very early days, and hopefully this number can be improved. According to Rajeev Kumar, there is still a lot of work to do, but the early progress is encouraging.
