Neha Kakkar was born on 6 June 1988 in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. She is the younger sister of playback singer Sonu Kakkar and singer-composer Tony Kakkar. During the early days, her father, Rishikesh, used to sell samosa outside a college for a living, while her mother, Niti Kakkar, was a homemaker.

Early life

Neha was not fond of singing initially. She studied in Class 4th at Guru Teg Bahadur Sahodaya School and did not want to sing as she thought it was a boring subject. However, her teacher persuaded her to continue singing, and she gave her first try at singing in a school program which was a success. Her father was pleased with her singing, and that motivated her to learn more and joined the Gwalior music institute in 1994, where she pursued her studies. She moved to Mumbai in 1998, when she was 16, and took to singing. Career Kakkar released her first track, “Jumme ki Raat” with her brother Sonu Kakkar and turned into a super hit. She featured in the Punjabi movie “Lootera” along with Sonu Kakkar. She also sang the song “Main Shayar Kya Hai” with Vishal Dadlani.

Career beginnings

On 7 October 2012, Neha Kakkar made her singing debut as a singer. Her first song as a playback singer was “Kala Chashma” from Salman Khan’s “Sultan”. The song was released online, and a few days later, it was released in movie theatres. In the same year, she appeared in Laila Main Laila in Sohail Khan’s directorial film “Laila Majnu”, alongside Fawad Khan and late actor Hrithik Roshan. The song was one of the best-selling songs of 2015, having sold more than half a million copies. In the movie, Sonu sang the hit version of “Sajni”, which turned out to be one of the biggest chartbusters of 2015. Kakkar had also made her Bollywood debut with actor Emraan Hashmi in “Jannat 2”.

Personal life

She has a younger brother named Mahesh Kakkar. Her mother called her Neha Kakkar because she found her apt for singing the word ‘Niya’ because of her curiosity about things. Before she turned two, her father left their house, and Neha and her mother, Niti, lived with their maternal grandfather. Around this time, she had her first music lesson from her grandfather, while her mother used to be a choir member and would sing songs on the radio. At the age of 7, Neha Kakkar first performed in front of her mother’s uncle, after whom she named her first music album ‘Joy of Music’. It contained a mixture of western and Indian music. Neha Kakkar’s achievements

She came to the limelight after she participated in the third season of Indian Idol, season 2. She also won the golden buzzer award during the finale of the show. She sang the song “Jana Gana Mana” for a Bangladeshi film titled Kuya, which won a National Award. She also became the first female singer in the history of Indian Idol to win the Best Bollywood playback singer award. She was also a participant in the singing reality show The Voice India. Subsequently, she appeared in the second season of the Indian adaptation of the same name. She is also a trained dancer and a trained classical dancer and completed her education from Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Mumbai.
